Finn European Championship 2003 - Marstrand ready for the Finn European Championship |
MARSTRAND, SWEDEN-(4-6-2003) The European Championship opens on Friday the 6th of June, with the first start scheduled for 11.00 a.m. The races can be viewed from the northwestern part of Marstrand, by Skallen lighthouse. The courses will be set so that each race takes about 90 minutes to complete. In all, nine races with 77 boats from 28 nations will be sailed during the European Championship. All 77 boats will start together in each race.
For many sailors, the Finn Europeans are the final preparations for the World Championship in Cadiz in September, the pre-Olympics in August and the Olympics in Athens next year. The world elite is in place in Marstrand, lead by Croatian Karlo Kuret, number one on the Finn world ranking. Number two on the ranking, Mateusz Kusznierewicz from Poland is also in the line-up, together with Emilios Papathanasiou, Greece’s favourite for the Olympics, England’s Ben Ainslie, Laser gold medallist in the 2000 Olympics, Italy’s Luca Devoti who won the Olympic silver that year and the 2001 World Champion Sebastien Godefroid from Belgium.
The line-up includes a total of 15 highly merited Olympic sailors.
Home sailors are, among others, Kristian Åderman from the Swedish National Development Team, number 11 on the world ranking, Johan Tillander also on the National Development Team and Anders Nilsson, an experienced Laser sailor who crossed over to Finn a few years ago.
In all, there are seven Swedish participants.
